Your dealership’s site converts 2% of users into sales or leads. Not bad, right?

In 2026, about 2.35% of website sessions converted, meaning the visitor purchased, submitted a form, or completed another valuable action.

Notably, first-time visitors convert far less often: just 1.0 to 2.0%.

If your dealership’s website is at even 2%, that’s good compared to the market. But even an improvement from 2% to 2.5% massively increases your vehicle sales: more deals financed, better-value trade-ins, and more customers overall.

If we, as an ad agency, made no plans to get you from 2% to 2.5%, 3% and higher conversion rates, we’d be leaving that 97–98% of additional traffic on the table. We’d be letting our clients lose money on their Google Ads, ChatGPT Ads, and everything else that brought those shoppers in.

What to do about it? Answer shoppers’ questions before they leave

Once a user has landed on your website, they’ve likely already cost you money: whether that’s paid ad clicks, all your SEO work on the website, or referrals you’ve worked hard to earn.

Think of each visit to the website as a cost. Each cost needs to give you back the maximum amount of revenue possible. So how we get these visitors to book a test drive is immensely important, not just for making money today, but for cashing in on all the investment you’ve made over the years to get these people to your website in the first place.

Enter the website sales agent.

A sales agent typically replies to questions from people on your website. For example, someone sees a Toyota Camry that just got listed on your website. The user shows up to view the vehicle’s details. But an annoying chatbot pops up and asks the user for their contact info.

The shopper might be looking for a Camry, but they decide they don’t want this particular trim. So they leave. Did it help for a chatbot to ask them to hand over their contact info? No, not at all.

What you needed to learn from this prospective buyer was that A) they’re interested in a Camry. Check. We know that because they’re on the Camry vehicle page. Next, you needed to learn B) that they want a Camry XLE or XSE, but not an LE. We don’t know that based on this user’s visit, so there’s little we can do to offer them the right vehicle unless they keep coming back to your website over and over and hand you their phone number for a call. That is unlikely, unfortunately, because as we’ve seen, a 2% conversion rate means the other 98% of site visitors will not convert and you’ll simply lose them.

Why think that a website chatbot with AI will do any better?

Here’s why: in 2026, customers are widely familiar with LLMs. ChatGPT offers a clean, quick entry point for shoppers to find information.

2026 estimates put ChatGPT users in the United States at 67.7 million (source). That’s an incredibly large portion of the population using one relatively new technology.

So there’s no question that consumers are familiar with chat-driven AI tools. They get answers faster than from Google in many cases.

Imagine that our Camry buyer has been going back and forth from Google Ads to all the dealership websites that appear at the top of Google Search. They click into website A. They don’t see what they want. They go to website B, and so on.

Then they come to your website. They see a ChatGPT-like chat feature in the bottom right of your website. They click it and start asking questions like: “Do you have it in red?” “Do you have a lower-mileage model?” “Is there a leather trim option?”

A standard chatbot on your website would have said “please give us your phone number.” But the AI-powered sales agent has collected all sorts of valuable questions. When you have questions, you can provide answers.

“Yes,” the sales agent tells the shopper. “We have 3 other Camrys for sale, including a red XSE with leather seats.”

“Great!” the shopper thinks. “I don’t have to go back to Google. I can just find what I need here.”

Even if you don’t have the Camry in red and XSE trim, the AI sales agent can be trained to notify your sales team of a customer looking for that particular model. In the meantime, the AI sales agent can let the customer know: “We have an XLE in blue with leather trim. If you’d like to see a red Camry, just give us your phone number and we’ll call you when we’ve found you a red one.”

Rather than opening with “please give us your phone number,” your website sales agent, all on its own, has discovered what the customer is looking for and collected their contact info. Now your sales team can follow up with exactly what the shopper wants, or make the call to suggest your closest alternative.

The end results, the costs

Just a small improvement in your website’s conversion rate hugely improves your lead generation. An AI-powered sales agent is one arrow in your quiver of options. But it’s a highly effective arrow: shoppers get answers and alternate suggestions right away and have fewer reasons to leave your website and go back to Google.

It’s also an extremely cost-effective option. A Business Development Representative typically requires about $20 per hour in pay and only works from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

An AI sales agent won’t likely replace human sales reps altogether, but it does two important things.

First, it allows dealerships that formerly could not afford a sales rep to answer website chat inquiries to now afford one.

Second, it allows dealerships to collect shopper inquiries outside business hours.

AI sales agents are a new technology, so we don’t promise specific sales increases. But we do guarantee better info from your customers, more leads, and improved conversion rates of site traffic to real sales leads for your RV, car, or truck dealership.
